Security Excellence Hackathon: Strengthening Cybersecurity for Healthcare

Feb 29, 2024

In collaboration with the Center of Excellence in Cybersecurity (CSEC) and DIH Its4Health, the Security Excellence Hackathon was organized with the support of the British Embassy, the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The aim of this event was to encourage future talents in the field of cybersecurity while raising awareness about the importance of information protection in the healthcare sector.

The hackathon attracted competitors from various technical backgrounds, with a particular interest in exploring the field of cybersecurity. A total of 11 teams accepted the challenge and showcased their skills in this dynamic competition.

Competitors were divided into three different categories: Hack the Box, Capture the Flag, and Security Design. The first two categories tasked teams with penetrating secure systems by exploiting vulnerabilities in their design. The third category, aligned with DIH's health initiative, required competitors to design and develop an application tailored to the healthcare system in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This category emphasized the importance of protecting patients' confidential data, expecting competitors to adhere to industry best practices during the application development.

The top recognition went to the winning team "Pivot," composed of students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sarajevo. They demonstrated exceptional knowledge in all three competition categories, earning them victory and a valuable prize - a trip to the leading cybersecurity conference in Europe, Cybersec Europe, to be held in London this year.

In addition to the competition, the hackathon included lectures delivered by prominent speakers. Dr. Adam Zagorecki, a senior research fellow at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom and a special guest of DIH Its4Health, shared invaluable insights into the security of medical data in an increasingly complex digital landscape.

Considering the importance of cybersecurity in protecting sensitive data, initiatives like the Security Excellence Hackathon are crucial for grooming the next generation of leaders in the cybersecurity field who will drive progress in this critical sector.

DIH its4Health is supported by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the project “Innovation and Digitalisation of SMEs in BiH/EU4DigitalSME. This support reflects the importance of the initiative in promoting the advancement of digital health through collaboration and expertise.
